Top 3 places in Sofia that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites:
- Rila Monastery
Enlisted
as a UNESCO List of Global Cultural Heritage in 1983, Rila Monastery is
the largest monastery in Sofia, Bulgaria and is among the most visited
attractions of the country. It is beautifully nestled in the heart of
the Rila Mountains where it had been residing since 10th
century and survived the test of time over the years and decades of its
existence. The monastery protects the Christian faith and the Bulgarian
education and culture, and it symbolizes Bulgaria as a whole. The
monastery complex covers an area of 8,800 square meters with nearly 300
rooms, 100 of which are monastic cells.
- Madara Rider
The
Madara Rider was included in the UNESCO list in 1979 as a unique rock
relief. Located in the northeast of the country, it has an impressive
image carved by an unknown artist on a cliff at a height of 23 meters.
The carving dates back to more than 1000 years but still the image of a
horseman with a spear, a wounded lion, fallen at the feet of the horse
and a hunting dog, is pretty much visible. In 2008, the Madara Rider
was elected as a global symbol of Bulgaria.
- Boyana Church
Another
UNESCO World Heritage Site of Sofia, Bulgaria is the Boyana Church “St.
Nicholas and St. Panteleimon”. Located at the foot of Vitosha
Mountains, the church holds unique traits of its existence. It was built
in the end of the 10th and the beginning of the 11th
century. The church stands out for the several layers of frescoes.
Additionally, multiple colourful images of Christ, Holy Mary, Bulgarian
kings, queens and saints make the ambiance all the more vibrant and
attractive.
Apart
from these three, there are several other sites enlisted by UNESCO that
